My name is Laura. The "VR" in my nickname is for Virtual Reality, i.e. me in cyberspace!

QUEEN OF CYBERSPACE : A SONG ABOUT ME?

While googling my website name I found an album called "Queen of Cyberspace", by Gene Charlebois and the late Bill Seighman -- a duo called "The Unknown". The title track is called "Queen of Cyberspace" (natch!) and it's really good! I can't believe I never heard of it before!

Click here to hear a 20-sec. snippet of "Queen of Cyberspace". (Used with permission.) To listen to the entire song visit Mr. Charlebois' page on My Space and click on the song in his music player. You can buy the album or song from Amazon. I bought the title track, of course!!!

And remember, think of me when you listen to the song, 'cause as you all know, I'm the ORIGINAL Queen of Cyberspace!

SNIPS AND SNAILS AND KITTY-CAT TAILS

I read an article online about a Japanese company that sells USB cat tail flash drives. Not real cat. Some other animal. Supposedly. ;-) I thought it was hilarious and e-mailed the link to all of my friends. The more I thought about it, though, the more I liked the idea -- albeit in a sick and twisted way.

Since I no longer have my cat's tail -- or any other part of her, for that matter -- I decided to make my own. I figured that if I didn't want to use the drive to store data, I could always use the tail to sweep the keyboard.

DONTCHA WISH YOUR CAPTCHA WAS NOT LIKE ME?*
*Uh, like MINE. Whoops.

It says on reCAPTCHA's website: "Stop spam and help digitize books at the same time! The words shown come directly from old books that are being digitized."

Great idea, but I always have a very hard time with reCAPTCHA's challenges. The mangling of the letters make it very difficult for me to figure out the words. I have to try several times.

But the second word in the challenge I got was impossible for me to decipher -- it was in Hebrew.

Captcha with Hebrew word
HELP DIGITIZE BOOKS. IN HEBREW. ;-)
Seriously, reCAPTCHA? A foreign language that doesn't use American characters??

CHALLENGE FAILED. *sob*

Even if I had known Hebrew, I would've had to change my keyboard mappings in Windows. I really don't think you're supposed to do that with reCAPTCHA. ;-)

Next time I'm at a website that uses reCAPTCHA, I'm clicking on "Audio challenge", haha.

GRUMPY SLEEPY CAT

I met an internet meme!

And not just any ol' meme, mind you, but Grumpy Cat!

The li'l dwarf kitty and her opportunistic owners, brother and sister Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen, were at Barnes & Noble in Union Square for the debut of their the cat's book, "The Grumpy Guide To Life - Observations by Grumpy Cat".

Several hundred people showed up to have their photo taken with her buy the book. Including me. Alone. None of my friends wanted to go were available. (It was last minute, ya know?)

Grumpy Cat, who's got endorsement deals up her li'l dwarf butt, slept through the whole event. It ain't easy being Grumpy Cat.

If I hadn't been up-close-and-personal to "Tardar [sic] Sauce" -- her real name -- I'd swear she was a plushie. She never moved. Not to yawn. Not to stretch. Not to blink.

Hmm... Now that I think about it, they brought her out in a cat bed -- not holding her. That seemed kinda weird. Maybe she IS a plushie.

Worried that she got the part in a remake of the classic Monty Python Dead Parrot sketch, I checked online and found a video from the Barnes & Noble event I went to.

GRUMPY CAT IS ALIVE.*

Check it out, yourself.

*Well, WAS alive.

THE SYNCOPATED CAT

Kit-Cat Clock

KIT-CAT KLOCK

Pop-culture junkie that I am, I've always wanted a gen-u-ine Kit-Cat Clock -- but they cost so gosh-darn much!

Hmm... If I can make a USB cat tail flash drive, I can make a cat clock with a tail pendulum, right?

Well, maybe not an ACTUAL clock with working gears, but certainly the cyberspace-equivalent!

It's purrr-fect, dontcha think?

For some REAL fun, click here to see a video of Luna -- a REAL Syncopated Cat -- and my inspiration for the cute animation.

And make sure your speakers are on!

TAD'S BROILED STEAKS IS GONE!

A New York institution, Tad's Broiled Steaks, has closed it's doors. Turned off it's grill. Covered it's last glass of wine in cellophane.

AFLAC JAPAN'S MANEKI NEKO DUCK

Go ahead, I know you want to!
ne-OW-flac
I've become obsessed with AFLAC Japan's Cat-Duck. A WHAT??! A Cat-Duck? Yup. A duck quacking "AFLAC" makes no sense in Japan (not that it makes much sense in the US, either, haha) so for the Japanese market AFLAC literally merged a duck and a cat. And not just any cat, oh, no! A maneki neko. And it says "AFLAC", too. Well, kinda sorta. It actually says "ne-OW-flac". Guess AFLAC Japan also merged "meow" and "AFLAC", hahaha!

The company introduced this monster adorable creature in a two minute animated TV commercial. And yes, a cat and a duck really merge, or "become one". When I saw that, I couldn't get a certain famous pop tune out of my head for DAYS! AFLAC Japan really missed a great marketing

tie-in with this! So, with nothing better to do one afternoon, I did it FOR them. Here's my literal mashup, or parody video. I hope Scary, Posh, Ginger and Baby don't come after me, hahaha!

Click here to watch my parody video!

The picture, above is of AFLAC Japan's Maneki Neko Duck plushie. So cute! You know I HAD to have one! ("Most desirable item.") Only available in Japan. (sob) And on eBay, of course! Cost me $25. The American plushie costs only $10, but the duck's not nearly as cute!

AFLAC Japan also produced several live-action TV commercials featuring both a cat and a duck. Dancing. And waving. Uh, I mean "beckoning" -- a maneki neko doesn't "wave" -- it "beckons". The TV spots end with them quacking and ne-OW-ing "AFLAC".
